When I moved to Israel in 2013, I didn’t speak a lick of Hebrew.

Okay, that’s not true. I knew two words: shalom (hello, goodbye, peace) and iparon (pencil). So I enrolled in an ulpan (a Hebrew school) in Tel Aviv and learned the language k’mo sh’tzarich (properly).

I discovered a language that is so simple in its structure, yet so rich in its meaning for us Jews, and so valuable to understanding Israeli culture, society, and even history.
